However, the idea of the bed and breakfast has been existing since the man began to travel. Monasteries used to offer a shelter and a meal to the travelers. They have always been popular among the travelers throughout Europe. The term, as said, finds its origin in the Great Britain but it is not used everywhere. Others are: paradors, pensions, gasthaus, minskukus, shukukos, pousados, each of them describing a bed-and-breakfast-like system. The United States, too, have a long history of bed and breakfast dating back to the first pioneers era. When they were travelling through the different countries they could find an abode at houses, inns, pensions. During the Great depression era many people made up their minds to open their own houses to travelers in order to earn some more money for their families. Thus, the word “boarding house” was used. Afterwards such a stay declined and theidea of lower class structures for vagabonds spread everywhere. During 1950s the “tourist home” were set up but soon replaced by the well known motels. Because of the growing number of Americans travelling throughout Europe, in the recent years, the bed and breakfast system has been found out even there. It is nomore considered as a lower priced shelter but as an alternative system to the chains of big hotels or to the motel rooms. |
